Analyzing Maps
One strategy when analyzing maps is to cut the map into pieces and give each student a piece of the map. This strategy is especially useful when analyzing historical maps. Give students a sticky note and ask students to record what they observe from their piece of the map. Then, have them pair with another student/group that has a different piece of the map. Have students compare their observations. Finally, ask students to put the pieces of the map together and have a discussion about the whole map. What do students see? What is missing? How is the map different or the same as other maps they have seen?
